Parent Services
Finding quality childcare is not always easy. In fact, most parents often do not know the right questions to ask, nor do they know what to look for when visiting a child care facility. The best answer to this question is to use your instincts. If the facility, staff or provider does not "feel" right, then this is probably not the best place for your child.
 
Types of Child Care Providers
There a number of child care provider options available to parents, including:
Child Care Centers
Type A Family Child Care Homes
Type B Family Child Care Homes
Registered Child Care Homes

Look:
Visit the home or center more than once, at different times.
Look:
Is the environment safe and clean?
Listen:
How does the setting sound? Is there positive interaction? Does the provider greet you & your child?
Ask:
Inquire about staff training, education, experience, and turnover rate.
Count:
What is the staff to children ratio?
Find:
What is the provider doing to improve or maintain quality child care?
Ask:
What activities are offered to encourage family involvement? Are children allowed to bring items from home (toys, blankets, etc.)?
 
Child Care Centers
Child Care Centers are facilities that are licensed and inspected by the state at least once a year. The size of the center determines the number of children and the number of staff. Rules for Licensed Child Care Centers
 
Mother with son.Type A Child Care Homes
Type A Child Care Homes are also licensed and inspected by the state at least once per year. They must be in the person's home. The maximum number of children permitted is 12, with two staff.
Mother with son.Type B Certified Child Care Homes
Type B Child Care Homes are also certified by the county and are located in the provider's home. The maximum number of children permitted is six. The county inspects family Child Care homes every year.
